This week our stylists began with classic white bedlinen, adding cushions, throws, bedsides and art to style two fresh looks for spring. Jess Bellef travelled to Hawaii with a beachy tropical vibe, while Jono Fleming created a luxe look fit for a Paris apartment. Shop both looks here.
Jess’s theme: Vintage Hawaii, inspired by the colour palette of pineapples and sun-faded palm-print fabric.
Who sleeps here? A total beach babe.
What’s on the bed? A white waffle quilt cover, like this Home Innovations Linen Cotton set; Kas Splice and Jacobson, and Rapee Lanai cushions in chartreuse and faded khaki with a hint of sky blue; a Kas Staten throw in citrus for when those sea breezes drift through the room.
What else is in the scene? The Suri Rattan round coffee table in crisp white; an Adalyn crochet jute rug to add beachy texture; a Casa Uno Glass Band pendant with rope-wrapped cord. Pineapples on a floating shelf above the bed act as a tropi-cool headboard (and makes the space smell incredible!), while a bird of paradise plant is right at home in this sun-kissed scene.
Tip for a photo-shoot worthy bed… Lay a good foundation with a neatly tucked sheet and fitted sheet, and make sure all your quilt inserts are evenly distributed. It takes some arm work, but shaking the inserts into place will help you create a lump-free bed. (See Jess’s tips here).
Morning person or night owl? Night owl. My alarm goes off at an illegal hour (we are talking before 5.30am here) as I live far from work and have to hit the road before peak hour. I could easily stay up all night but the thought of a pre-dawn wake up gets me into bed.
When I’m in bed I like to… pin! Downloading the Pinterest app has cost me hours in mindless pinning and scrolling, much to the detriment of my not-so-morning person tendencies.
Jono’s theme A Parisian pied-a-terre, in moody faded indigos with an eclectic mix of classic and modern pieces.
Who sleeps here? A world traveller, definitely a city slicker
What’s on the bed? White waffle bedding as above; cushions in greys, blues and hints of velvet – including a fringed Rapee Dove Whisper cushion; the Laguna cushion in a bold patterned floral adds a hint of drama. I’ve used a Canningvale Smokey Grey Melange flat sheet as a throw, it’s the perfect light layer for the transition between seasons.
What else is in the scene? I love to mix and match side tables and bedside lights like the amber glass Keira pendant and Sia table lamp from Mercator; the Blue Piper rug and nature-inspired Piece Eye artwork emphasise the blue-grey tones. The beautiful orange Keeley Velvet Goldmine chair is the perfect contrast to all the greys and blues and emphasises the amber accents.
Tips for a photo-shoot worthy bed? Don’t overdo the cushions! If I see beds styled with heaps of cushions, my first thought is the effort it would be every night to take them all off the bed and put them back on the next morning. Stick to three or so, they’re great to give a bit of colour to a neutral bedspread and you can always swap them out whenever you’re ready for a change!
Morning person or night owl? A bit of both! I tend to hit the hay pretty late but I’m up at 5:30 every morning. I have no idea how I function on such little sleep… I’ve never been one for a sleep in. It’s unnatural, I know!
When I’m in bed I like to… Binge (watch, that is). Now that Netflix and Stan are available on my laptop, I normally cram in a few episodes of something before I go to sleep. I know you’re meant to limit my screen time before sleep, but I guess that’s why it’s a guilty secret!
